Age and Altitude

Daily writing prompt
What do you think gets better with age?

Perspective is like age and altitude. The higher you get, the more clearly you begin to see things for what they are.

If you’re a pilot sitting inside a plane waiting to take off, all you can see is the runway. That’s your immediate future. That is mostly all of us through our young adult lives.

It’s not until you lift off and have begun your ascent that you begin to understand the runway was only the beginning – a spec in the grand scheme of things.

Matter of fact, the higher you climb, the more you comprehend your level of significance in this world… Remember that fact next time you make a mistake. You can be important, but most of the time your failures only matter to those who do not – Unless you’re an Air Traffic Controller or the person who turns the keys on the nukes of course.

People living at 30k feet realize there are more important things to be concerned with other than traffic jams, crowded sidewalks, and situations that are beyond their control.

From time to time I find myself daydreaming about the crazy things I did while I was younger. And while I certainly miss those adventures, I would not be willing to lower my altitude in order to be closer to them again.
