Ironic. This has been on my mind the past few days.
Sisyphus was condemned to push a boulder up a hill, only for it to roll back down just as he reached the top, forcing him to repeat the task endlessly… The futility of effort.
Looking back on the life I have cobbled together, I would compare it being caught in a rainstorm while walking downtown in a big city. I must get from A to Z one way or another. There are exponentially more raindrops to soak me than overhangs to protect me from the downpour. Such is life. Mere existence and loss pour down in overwhelming numbers compared to the fleeting moments of safety, happiness, and contentment.
It’s a cruel game we play from cradle to grave. The size of the reward is dwarfed by the emptiness that follows… So we chase that dragon endlessly – just as Sisyphus pushed his rock.
War vets, fighter pilots, police officers, and extreme athletes experience a whole different level of loss. Once they have to retire, not only do they lose that much needed hit of adrenaline, they no longer have the job that provided them a purpose. Drugs, alcohol and/or suicide then enter the conversation.
The scales remain unbalanced. The rewards are minimal compared to what is sacrificed.
People so busy making money, they never make a life.
So busy fighting off old demons, they don’t see the new ones they make.
So focused on overcompensating for their childhood, they don’t see how their own children’s minds are being distorted.
The list of human tragedy is endless and the older I get, the more I see that all we do is rinse and repeat -just in different formats.
Rather than care for ourselves, we seek shortcuts. Rather than invest our time into being better, we choose distractions from the depressive state we’re already in. Many choose to watch the world burn as long as they’re the one who gets paid to light the match.
Greed. Arrogance. Entitlement. Victimization. Accountability. Avoidance. The commercialization of these beliefs are done so out of corporate and political greed, nothing more. Because of this,
I will always be Sisyphus.
You will always be Sisyphus.
We will always be Sisyphus.
