This hit like a sledgehammer.
We all want to believe we are good judges of character. Our track record proves otherwise. Even those with the best radar can be fooled. There’s always someone who is damaged in ways we are unfamiliar with.
You see a sign in the middle of a frozen lake. The words are too small to read from shore. Because the water is frozen, you are able to walk out well beyond the shoreline… till you’re close enough to see the message in its entirety.

With age comes wisdom. Wisdom requires pain. Could be mental. Could be physical… But there’s always a cost and it is always paid in full -sometimes with interest.
